Marburg Research Group for Brain Stimulation in Psychiatry

Principal Investigator: Dr. med. Maxim Zavorotnyy

Brain stimulation is a promising field of research with already established and newly developed methods like ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) or VNS (vagus nerve stimulation) that target treatment-resistant forms of depression and also other psychiatric disorders. Yet its exact mechanisms of action are not fully understood and treatment forms are rarely accessible for patients. It is the goal of our research group to study the effects of brain stimulation on brain structure, connectivity, brain metabolites, cognition, stress hormones and neurotrophic growth factors by means of structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS), comprehensive neuropsychological testing, as well as serum and saliva analysis. With a better understanding of the underlying pathomechanisms we hope to refine treatment options and indications for patients with depression and/or treatment resistance

Focus of research:
  • (treatment-resistant) major depression
  • biomarkers of therapeutic action in brain stimulation, especially ECT, rTMS, VNS
  • structural and functional MRI as well as MR-Spectroscopy
  • prediction of therapeutic outcome
